Ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which was completed in 1963, is an incredible experience. Unlike most aerial tram rides, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway rotates throughout the entire 10 minute, 2.5 mile journey up the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon. In fact, thanks to the updates to the tramway in 2000, these tramcars are now the largest rotating cars in the world. Along the way, you’re guaranteed awe-inspiring views of the valley as it stretches out below you. The tramway delivers you to San Jacinto State Park at an elevation of 8, 516 feet, where it is commonly 30 degrees cooler than the desert valley below. From here, the adventure is just beginning.
At the top of the Palm Springs Aerial tramway, there are two restaurants, observation decks and viewpoints, a natural history museum, and over 50 miles of hiking trails. One of the simplest trails, depending on your time and ability, is the Desert View Trail. It’s a 1.5 mile loop which leads to a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. If you’re willing and capable to take a more strenuous hike, there’s no better trail than the one to San Jacinto Peak. It’s best to get started on this trek early, as it is 5.5 mile hike one way. However, once done you’ll find yourself on the second highest point in southern California. On clear days it is reported that you can see Catalina Island. The views are exceptional. There are also self-guided and Natural History Association-guided nature walks available for those who are interested.
Before heading down for the evening, cap off an extraordinary day in the San Jacinto Mountains with dinner at Peaks Restaurant. There are no finer views than the ones enjoyed here. Reservations are highly recommended. If you’d rather just have drinks before making the journey down the mountain, The Lookout Lounge is a full cocktail bar offering a variety of drinks and appetizers.
Finally, upon returning to the desert floor, the luxurious accommodations at the Willows Historic Palm Springs boutique hotel will be waiting for you. Book your desert getaway today.
